BEAM managed to be distinguished among the 9 BEXUS teams with SHADE (SDR Helix Antenna Deployment Experiment). The experiment aims to design and construct a deployment and pointing mechanism of a helix antenna which shall be attached to the body of the stratospheric balloon. It shall be equipped with an Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS) that will ensure the antenna never loses contact with the Ground Station. Moreover, the communication data shall be handled through SDR (Software Defined Radio) algorithms to further reduce the weight and size of the experiment. The success of the experiment paves the way for new applications in space missions -such as nanosatellites, stratospheric balloons and more- by enhancing the efficiency of such systems while achieving mechanical simplicity.
